GREENWICH, CT — A Greenwich police officer is being recognized for her actions during a fire on May 19.

The award is given to any member of the Greenwich Police Department, who, in any given month, performs exceptional achievement in any police endeavor, including extraordinary valor, investigative work, drug control and prevention, crime prevention, community policing, community relations activities, juvenile programs, training programs, and traffic safety, according to the GPD.

On May 19 at approximately 11:36 a.m., Su Ah Sor was working a traffic detail for the town and directing traffic at a construction site at the intersection of West Putnam Avenue and Greenwich Avenue, police said.

Su Ah Sor noticed thick black smoke billowing from the top of a building in the area of 24 Greenwich Ave. She radioed what she was seeing into police dispatch and went toward the smoke on foot, police said.

When she made it to the scene, she saw someone entering the building with a fire extinguisher, but told the person to leave immediately, police said.

"Su Ah Sor entered the building and began to evacuate the building’s occupants without regard for her own personal safety," police said in a news release, noting that she sustained smoke inhalation from the burning fire.

All occupants evacuated safely and crews worked for less than an hour to bring the fire under control, according to the Greenwich Fire Department, who noted that damage was contained to the rear decking and roof.

Putnam Avenue was closed at Deerfield and Lafayette Place, as was the upper portion of Greenwich Avenue, for several hours.

Following the blaze, the GFD asked the public for videos and images of the area and the fire.

The cause of the fire was undetermined.
