Connecticut Weather: Snow Accumulation Estimates Rise

Snow accumulations are on the rise for this weekend's snowstorm. Here are the new details on how much to expect and when it will begin.

A few days ago, the weather headlines in Connecticut all focused on a prolonged warming trend, which has sort of happened, and a lack of snow in the forecast for at least a couple of weeks. Fast-forward to the present and by Sunday morning several places in Connecticut may end up with 6 inches or more of snow on the ground. But don't worry, it will melt soon as temps could hit the 70-degree mark next week.

As we know with weather forecasts, nothing is set in stone, but the latest computer models now show a potentially moderate snowstorm in Connecticut Saturday night and early Sunday morning. The National Weather Service is predicting between 3 and 6 inches of snow for Southern Connecticut and closer to 6 inches in Litchfield, Hartford and Tolland counties.

Connecticut meteorologists are a bit more bullish on the snow accumulation and are largely predicting 4 to 8 inches of snow statewide. If you have plans Saturday night, there may be some issues. The snow is expected to begin around 8 p.m. Saturday and since it is quick moving storm the snow will fall heavily at times.

It's likely winter weather advisories, watches and possibly warnings may be issued by the National Weather Service. WTNH News 8 Meteorologist said Thursday night that "After analyzing some new data, we have bumped our snow forecast a bit for Saturday night. There's still a chance it shifts a little lower depending on the storm track. We'll keep you posted!"

Fox 61 Meteorologist offered more details on the timeline of expected snow.

"Still looks like weekend snow is mainly overnight. Saturday night after 8 PM, done before 8 AM Sunday. Quick hitter, and some heavier snow rates are possible too if all pieces fall into place. Plowable snow likely. Then it all melts quickly with warmer days ahead," Frank said.

The first day of spring is March 20 for those of you wondering and baseball spring training games begin next week.
