Suspect in High-End SUV Thefts in Greenwich Is Caught

Greenwich Police obtained an arrest warrant for the man accused of stealing Range Rovers, a Mercedes Benz and a Bentley.

Greenwich Police have arrested the man they say is responsible for thefts of six high-end vehicles — including a Bentley.

Police spokesman Lt. Kraig Gray said the suspect was arrested Oct. 2 when he appeared in state Superior Court in Stamford for an unrelated charge. “He is part of an organized motor vehicle theft ring in the region. We worked with several other agencies including the New York Police Department,” Gray said.

Several of the vehicles, including the Bentley, have been recovered. For nearly a year, thieves have been swiping mostly high-end SUVs that the owners had left unlocked with the keys inside and parked in central Greenwich.

Gray said investigators got a break in those cases with the arrest in mid-August of Ronald Tejada, 20, of the Bronx, NY, on an attempted first-degree larceny charge in connection with the attempted theft of a Range Rover that was parked on Greenwich Avenue, near Lewis Street.

According to Gray, investigators were able to link to Tejada to the thefts of six other vehicles — thefts that have plagued the town for nearly a year. Detectives obtained a warrant charging Tejada with six counts of first-degree larceny in connection with the thefts.

Tejada is being held in lieu of $100,000 bond and is scheduled to return to court on Nov. 2, according to the Connecticut Judicial Branch website.
