CT Weather: Flash Flood Watch Issued For Saturday

A new round of potentially severe weather is approaching Connecticut. Here are the new details on when it may arrive.

The National Weather Service issued a Flash Flood Watch for all of Connecticut on Saturday as heavy rain is expected, which could lead to flooding concerns. A tornado cannot be ruled out either, NBC Connecticut Chief Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan said earlier on Friday. Some areas of the state could rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches an hour on Saturday.

For Southern Connecticut, the weather service says in an updated advisory:

Through Saturday morning

* Showers and thunderstorms moving across the area will become widespread this afternoon and through Saturday morning with locally heavy downpours. This will result in a threat for flash flooding through Saturday morning across the region.

Flash flooding of urban areas will be possible where locally heavy rainfall occurs. Locations that have already received substantial rain in the last couple of days will be particularly vulnerable.

For Northern Connecticut, the weather service says in an updated advisory:

Through Saturday afternoon

* Showers and embedded thunderstorms with pockets of torrential rainfall will impact the region at times through Saturday afternoon. The activity will likely come in two rounds...the first late this afternoon and evening. There probably will then be a lull in the activity before more showers and thunderstorms
work into the region early Saturday morning and continue into the afternoon.

* Pockets of torrential rain will be capable of producing 1 to 2 inch per hour rainfall rates. This will result in the potential of localized urban as well as small stream flash flooding if torrential rain trains over portions of the region.

ORIGINAL STORY: What's going on here? Connecticut has seen several tornadoes over the past few months and a tornado even touched down in Queens, New York late last night, the National Weather Service has confirmed today. And now comes word from NBC Connecticut Chief Meteorologist Ryan Hanrahan that it is possible that a tornado could pop up in Connecticut again on Saturday.

More thunderstorms, downpours and strong wind gusts are all expected Saturday before calmer weather takes over on Sunday with temps near 90 degrees but less humidity for us.

WTNH News 8 Meteorologist Gil Simmons says, "Sunshine burning through for the middle of the day into the afternoon today with a breeze. High temperatures will be in the 80s with lots of humidity. Scattered showers/thunderstorms possible late in the day. Plan on some rain and thunder for Saturday morning into the middle of the day. I do expect nice weather with sunshine 85 to 90 on Sunday."

The National Weather Service says for Southern Connecticut there is a low chance of flash flooding tonight and also on Saturday. (To sign up for free, local breaking news alerts from more than 100 Connecticut communities click here.)

"Showers and thunderstorms will become more widespread tonight into Saturday as a weak frontal boundary moves into the region....With plenty of moisture available, any storms could contain heavy rainfall. This could lead to localized flooding of poor drainage and low lying areas, especially in places that see multiple rounds of storms," the National Weather Service says.

For Northern Connecticut, the weather service says, "There is the potential for a few strong to severe thunderstorms. Some thunderstorms may cause excessive rainfall with a risk for localized flooding especially in urban corridors through late this evening. Locally strong to damaging wind gusts are also possible."

And on Saturday you can expect more of the same in Northern Connecticut as "There is the potential for a few strong to severe thunderstorms. Some of the storms may produce heavy rainfall that may bring a risk for localized flooding especially in urban corridors. Locally strong to damaging wind gusts are also possible."
