GUILFORD, CT — Ellis Tibere, the Guilford man accused of attempted murder in a 2020 stabbing in Westport, has been offered a plea deal by a judge that could send Tibere to prison for at least five years, the Connecticut Post reported.

Tibere, 22, is accused of stabbing a Greenwich woman in the leg while in the parking lot of a Westport salon, then leading police on a chase that ended on the Sherwood Island Connector.

The victim, who was 33 at the time, suffered a serious leg injury in the attack, according to her attorney.

Superior Court Judge Gary White reportedly extended the offer to Tibere during a hearing on Wednesday. Under the proposed deal, Tibere would plead guilty to:

  • Attempt to commit murder
  • First-degree assault
  • Carrying a dangerous weapon
  • First-degree criminal mischief
  • Violation of conditions of release

As a result, Tibere would reportedly receive a prison sentence of five to 10 years, followed by five years of probation. The criminal mischief and release violation charges stem from Tibere allegedly cutting off a GPS tracking device from his ankle and trying to run away; he was apprehended a short distance from his Guilford home.

Prosecutors reportedly objected to the plea offer, stressing that Tibere should serve at least 10 years in prison.

Tibere, who has struggled with other mental health issues throughout his life, has rejected a plea deal in the past. His defense attorney, John Gulash, told the court that he will discuss the offer with Tibere and his family, and make a decision on or before Tibere's next court date of May 24.
