34 Vehicles Stolen In 2 Weeks In Hamden: Police

Police have seen a "surge" in motor vehicle thefts in Hamden this year and are advising residents to take several precautions.

HAMDEN, CT — More than 30 vehicles have been stolen within the past two weeks in Hamden, according to police.

The town has seen a surge in motor vehicle thefts in 2020, according to police Capt. Ronald Smith.

There have been 227 reported thefts as of Nov. 9, which represents an increase of nearly 44 percent from this time last year, Smith said.

There have been 34 reported motor vehicle thefts in Hamden within the past two weeks, according to Smith.

Hamden police recommend the following to prevent car thefts:

- Never leave your vehicle running while unattended. A vast majority of thefts in Hamden have occurred this way.

- Lock the doors on your vehicle.

- Always remove the keys from the ignition.

- Close all of your windows, including the sunroof.

- Park in an area that is illuminated.

- Install an anti-theft device, if possible.

- Never leave valuables inside the vehicle.

- Do not resist if you are the victim of a carjacking. Your vehicle can be replaced.
