Hamden Man Charged With Burglary, Claimed To Be Victim: Police

A man, who claimed to be a robbery victim, is accused of burglarizing a home in New Haven, according to police.

HAMDEN, CT — A Hamden man is accused of burglarizing a New Haven home and telling investigating officers that he had been robbed by a person inside the home… despite there being nobody inside, according to New Haven Police.

At about 4:15 a.m. on March 24, New Haven Police responded to a report of a burglary-in-progress in the 300 block of Dixwell Avenue. “He’s still in there,” a neighbor told police as they pulled up, according to Officer David Hartman, police spokesman.

The witness told police that a man wearing red sweatpants and a matching top, kicked in the front door and went inside. The witness said the man had been outside yelling and swearing about money owed to him, according to Hartman. Police found no one inside and a “fingerprint technician went to work and the home was secured,” Hartman said.

Police were called back to the scene about 10 minutes after they left because someone reported that the suspect had returned. Police returned to the scene and found their suspect, David Isaiah Pouncey, according to Hartman.

“Pouncey told the officers he’d been robbed by someone inside the house,” Hartman said in a press release. “When they informed Pouncey there was nobody inside, he stared at them with no reply.”
