Majority Want Stricter Gun Laws: Quinnipiac Poll

The poll also found near-universal support for universal gun background checks.

HAMDEN, CT — A Quinnipiac University Poll conducted after the Parkland, Fla. high school shooting found that the majority of voters support stricter gun control measures. The shooting left 17 dead.

The poll found that overall voters support stricter gun laws 66 to 31 percent while gun owners support stronger measures 50 to 44 percent. Support was at its highest level ever since the Quinnipiac Poll started focusing on the issue after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting.

There is near-universal support for universal background checks with it favored 97 to 2 percent, including 97 to 3 percent among gun owners.

"If you think Americans are largely unmoved by the mass shootings, you should think again. Support for stricter gun laws is up 19 points in little more than 2 years," said Tim Malloy, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Poll.

Those polled also said Congress has to do more to reduce gun violence by a margin of 75 to 17 percent.

The poll was conducted between February 16 to 19.
