Man Found With $18K Worth Of Marijuana During Traffic Stop: Hamden Police
The man was arrested after police say he went through a stop sign and was found with more than $18,000 worth of marijuana.

HAMDEN, CT — A New Haven man was found with more than $18,000 worth of marijuana after going through a stop sign Monday night in Hamden, according to police. At about 10 p.m. on July 10, Hamden Police Officers Robert O’Neill and Mark Sheppard observed a motor vehicle proceed through a stop sign at the intersection of Morse Street and Newhall Street and a motor vehicle stop was immediately conducted, according to Capt. Ronald Smith.
Smith said that upon approaching the vehicle, the officers smelled “a strong odor” of marijuana emanating from inside. A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the discovery and seizure of 2.06 pounds of marijuana, which had a street value of $18,660, according to Smith. The operator of the vehicle, William Sweat, was arrested and transported to police headquarters, according to Smith.

Sweat, 21, of Mead Street in New Haven, was charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of a controlled substance with the intent to sell.
Sweat, who was detained on a $10,000 bond, is scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on July 24.
