Man Tried To Rob Gas Station At Gunpoint: Hamden Police

The man was distracted by the store clerk, who tried to grab the gun, during an attempted armed robbery in Hamden, according to police.

HAMDEN, CT — A Hamden man is accused of trying to rob a gas station at gunpoint earlier this year, according to police.

The attempted armed robbery happened around 4:30 a.m. on April 18 at Sam’s Mobil Gas Station, 3394 Whitney Ave., according to Capt. Ronald Smith.

The clerk told police a man walked into the store, brandished a gun and demanded the contents of the cash register.

“The clerk briefly distracted the gunman, while attempting to grab the firearm,” Smith said.

The suspect then left the store, walking north on Whitney Avenue.

Det. Shawn Nutcher conducted an investigation that led to an arrest warrant for Alexander Hernandez.

Hernandez, 20, of Evergreen Avenue, was arrested and charged with criminal attempt to commit second-degree robbery and tampering with physical evidence. Hernandez, who was released after posting a $50,000 bond, is scheduled to appear at Meriden Superior Court on Jan. 6.
