When a good Samaritan truck driver pulled over to render aid, Perez pointed a realistic-looking fake gun at the truck driver and had the driver drive him northbound on I-89, officials said.

The U.S. Attorney's Office said the truck driver was eventually able to flee from the truck in a parking lot in Berlin, Vt.

Responding officers found Perez in the cab of the truck and arrested him, authorities said.

If convicted, Perez faces a maximum possible penalty of life imprisonment, officials said.
