34 DUI Arrests Made, 411 Crashes 4th Of July Weekend: State Police

State police released numbers concerning crashes, fatal accidents, traffic violations and DUI arrests over the 4th of July holiday.

MIDDLETOWN, CT – Connecticut State Police had nearly 300 fewer calls for service during this year’s Fourth of July weekend compared to 2022.

Connecticut State Police said they had a total of 6,186 calls for service during the long July 4 weekend.

In 2022 State police received 6,463 calls for service; in 2021, the number dropped to 5,390, and in 2022, the calls for service were 6,520 during the July 4 weekend.

For this year’s July 4 statistics, State Police captured stats between Thursday, June 29 at 6 p.m. to Tuesday, July 4 at 7 p.m.

This year, State Police issued 730 violations (including unsafe lane change, following too closely, cell phone, texting, speeding, seatbelt, etc.) which are 180 fewer than in 2022 when state police issued 910 violations. In 2021 state police issued 978 violations, and 748 in 2020.

There were 422 speeding citations, well below what state police issued in 2022 at 644 speeding citations. State Police handed out 483 speeding tickets in 2021 and 279 in 2020.

State Police made 34 DUI arrests in the 2023 July 4 Weekend compared to 50 in 2022. In 2021 state police made 26 DUI arrests, and 29 in 2020.

However, there were more motor vehicle accidents in 2023 compared to 2022 at 411 and 299, respectively. Out of the 411 motor vehicle accidents in 2023, state police said one was a serious injury in Stamford, and there were two fatalities: Greenwich and North Canaan.

In 2022 out of the 299 motor vehicle accidents, 37 resulted in serious injury, and two resulted in fatalities.

In 2021 there were 381 motor vehicle accidents, with 52 resulting in serious injury and three in fatality. In the previous year, 2020, there were 271 motor vehicle accidents, with 49 resulting in serious injury and one resulting in a fatality.
