Man Threatens Victim with Knife Over Borrowed DVD: Middletown Police

The victim told police that the suspect kept repeating, "I want my movie back" even though he had returned it about 20 minutes earlier.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — A Middletown man is accused of threatening another man with a knife over a borrowed DVD he said wasn’t returned, despite the victim telling police he gave it back about 20 minutes before the incident occurred.

David E. Scranton, 50, of Washington Street, was arrested on Aug. 9 for the incident after police responded to the parking lot of 400 Washington Street on the report of an active dispute.

The victim told police that he had borrowed a DVD from Scranton the previous day and was approached by Scranton at about 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 9, asking for the movie back.

The victim told police that he returned the DVD to Scranton without incident, according to the police report.

About 20 minutes later, the victim was in the rear parking lot and saw Scranton walking toward him with a green kitchen knife in his right hand and said he wanted the DVD back, according to the report.

The victim told Scranton he just returned the DVD to him, but said Scranton kept repeating, “I want my movie back,” according to the report.

The victim felt that Scranton was going to cut him with the knife so he walked backwards away from him and saw a witness calling police and Scranton walked away, police said.

Scranton was arrested and charged with second-degree breach of peace and second-degree threatening.

He was issued a $10,000 surety bond and was scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 10.
