In Memory of an Animal Caretaker

Middletown's Animal Control officer wrote this touching tribute to her friend, Merri Mahoney, of CT Lab Rescue.

It was with great sadness that I heard of the sudden passing of my friend Merri Mahoney of CT Lab Rescue. Merri was a unique and amazing person! She loved her family and she loved dogs!

Merri bred beautiful labs of her own and felt that she needed to balance the breeding with rescue. She would travel on long road trips to Ohio to bring back pregnant dogs that were in risk of being euthanized. She lovingly cared for them and their puppies, ultimately finding them all great homes.

She helped us numerous times at the Animal Control Office by taking Labs with special needs out of our shelter. Merri always had a smile on her face and a wisecrack that would make me laugh out loud. She had a laugh that you could pick out across a crowded room and a silly demeanor that always made the day a little bit better.

Though you are gone much too soon Merri, you will never be forgotten. Our thoughts go out to Merri’s husband and son as well as her extended family and friends.

Merri, wherever you are now, I have no doubt that you are shaking things up! Thank you for always caring about every animal and for never turning your back on those in need. — ACO Gail
