Middlesex Community College 50th anniversary display at Legislative Office Building in Hartford Feb. 1–14

As students return to spring classes, Middlesex Community College is continuing a yearlong celebration to mark the 50th anniversary of its founding.

From February 1 to 14, a retrospective photographic display is open for public viewing in the lower concourse of the Legislative Office Building in Hartford. The MxCC 50th anniversary display contains more than 50 images and a timeline showing how the College has progressed from a tiny house on Hunting Hill Avenue in 1966 to the modern and scenic 38-acre Middletown campus of today. “Commemorating our anniversary also allows us to celebrate our commitment to students, reflect on our success, and revel in the sense of community we’ve built over five decades,” said Cheryl Dumont-Smith, associate dean of development, who leads the committee in charge of the project.

On Friday, April 28, eight of the 10 former Middlesex Community College presidents will return to the Middletown campus and join current President Anna Wasescha for a conversation reflecting on the first 50 years. The event begins at 4 p.m. followed by a reception.

Other events for the spring semester acknowledging the anniversary include a “last lecture” by history professor Victor Triay on April 19, the annual Cap and Gown 5K Road Race on May 12, and the commencement ceremony on May 25.

In 50 years, MxCC has proudly educated more than 80,000 students. Alumni, parents, students and friends are encouraged to share personal memories and stories on a special website.
