Middletown Nursing Home Fined After Resident Chews Finger to Bone: Report

State health officials fined two nursing homes for incidents in which residents were injured when doctors' orders weren't followed.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — Apple Rehabilitation of Middletown was one of two nursing homes fined by the state Department of Public Health for incidents in which residents were injured and suffered complications after doctors’ orders weren’t followed, according to the Connecticut Health I-Team.

Cara Rosner of the Connecticut Health I-Team reports Apple Rehabilitation was fined $1,635 for an incident last December in which a resident chewed an index finger until bone was exposed.

The doctor had directed that the patient’s right-hand be covered with a sock because the resident had osteoporosis and dementia and a known habit of chewing the right index finger, Rosner reports.
