SATs: City Students Score Lower Than Rest of State

SAT college entrance exam scores for 2012 were released by the College Board Monday and, on average, students at Middletown High fared worse than their 11th and 12th grade counterparts statewide.

 

Student Achievement Test scores at Middletown High School improved slightly overall in 2012, but remain lower, on average, than the rest of Connecticut and the nation. The most significant change for the city's students is average writing scores were up 35 points.

The state's students scored an average 510 on the writing test this year — down three points from 2010-11 — but significantly ahead of the national average of 488.

At the high school, the average math score on the test was 461 compared to the statewide average of 512. In 2011, Middletown High students averaged 479.5 on the math exam.

The average 2012 math score at the high school was the lowest in at least eight years.

Writing scores at MHS averaged 484 compared to 510 for the state in 2012, while for reading, students at Middletown High scored 474 compared to 510 on the reading exam.

MHS students taking the test last year averaged 438.6 on the writing exam and 478.1 on the reading exam.

In all, 83 percent of students at the high school level took the SAT exam last spring and Connecticut has one of the highest participation rates in the country.

Nationally, the test scores averaged 514 for math, 496 for reading and 488 for writing.
