Saving Water: ‘Wishing Wells’ Coming to Wesleyan Graduation Ceremony

A group of students focused on eliminating plastic water bottles from the Middletown campus are providing an alternative during the 2013 ceremony: a pair of water filtration systems.

It’s going to be a water bottle-less graduation ceremony this year at Wesleyan.

During the 2013 commencement ceremonies a group of underclassmen will be dispensing water through a pair of “Wishing Wells,” which are water filtration dispensaries. This is part of the university’s yearlong sustainable initiative to ban plastic water bottles on campus, according to the student-run Wesleying blog.

“As you probably have noticed by now, Wesleyan implemented a campus-wide ban on water bottles this past year that has been met with a pretty positive response,” the blog read. “Plastic water bottles create environmental waste and, in the words of Melodious, the product ‘privatizes a public commodity.’ Why pay for something you could get for free from the tap in your sink?”

Meanwhile, the university will provide 6,000 reusable bottles that will be available at the graduation ceremony as well as an upcoming Wesleyan reunion, according to The Hartford Business Journal.

The Journal also reported that this is part of a greater effort across other Connecticut colleges and universities that are looking for sustainable initiatives on campus.
