Students Rescue Dog From Frozen River In Middletown

The 65-pound dog fell through thin ice and was rescued by members of the indoor track team who were practicing nearby.

MIDDLETOWN, CT — Several members of the Middletown High School indoor track team are being credited with helping to rescue a 65-pound dog from frigid waters when it fell through thin ice on the Coginchaug River on Dec. 11, according to the Middletown Press.

Jim Bransfield of the Press reports Bernadette Graham was taking her two dogs for a walk through Veterans Park and down the trail when Rex ventured too far out on the river and fell through the ice. She screamed for help.

Middletown junior Dylan Karpel was running nearby during the team’s practice and didn’t waste any time jumping into the river to try and rescue Rex, according to Bransfield. Karpel received some help from his teammates and pulled Rex to safety.
