MIDDLETOWN, CT — Police will have extra officers at schools in Middletown Monday after unfounded threat rumors circulated.

Police investigated the rumors and determined they were unfounded, said Mayor Dan Drew in a Facebook post

"Rumors like this happen quite a bit and there have been many occasions in the past when myself, Chief McKenna, or Dr. Conner have addressed them," Drew said. "This case was no different except that, in this instance, parents were posting online that they were hearing rumors of an attack and did so based on rumors circulating amongst their kids."

Drew any parents with concerns about rumors in the future to contact the police department instead of circulating them on social media.

"I understand and share the fear we all feel for our kids’ safety. Our country has a sickness. Children pay the price for it," he said. "But everyday, in this community, we do our best to see that our kids are safe and will continue to do so."
