State Senator Saud Anwar (D-3rd) and State Representative Jonathan Steinberg (D -Westport) hosted a press conference to express their support of an act concerning aid in dying for terminally ill patients.
If passed, SB 88 would permit an adult patient with a terminal illness, which is defined as having six months or less to live, to access lethal drugs by voluntary request. The two legislators were joined by several medical aid in dying advocates.

“As a physician who is committed to help prolong life and wellbeing of all patients, I humbly recognize various illnesses require some patients to take difficult and unnecessary end of life journeys. The options afforded by this bill will give comfort to some of those individuals on those difficult end of life journeys, and I do not want to deny another physician working with those patients the right to consider the options this bill affords," said Anwar.
"A significant majority of Connecticut residents favor an aid in dying option. This bill empowers a very small number of terminally ill people who experience unremitting suffering to choose how to end life on their own terms. We wish to grant them agency to take control of their last days, not cede decisions to doctors, family members or insurance companies. It should be a fundamental right that people can make their own choices regarding their own bodies, and not be subject to others’ religious beliefs," said Steinberg.
