Nina Sankovitch, author of Tolstory and the Purple Chair: My Year of Magical Reading will be the guest speaker at the Milford Public Library Annual Meeting on Wednesday, May 9 at 7:00 p.m. In Nina's book, she tells of a lifetime of reading and her exceptional year long book-a-day accomplishment, stimulated by her need to cope and uncover how to live again after the death of her adored older sister.
In her memoir, the Westport mother of four sons recounts how she retreated from her outside activities and immersed herself in literature. She began by allowing herself six hours each day to read and write her book review blog, ReadAllDayLong.org, while her children were in school. Despite numerous and unexpected interruptions, she successfully completed her reading mostly while sitting in her "purple chair." Some may wonder at what moment or specific book did Nina know for certain that she was on the right path. It was clear from the very beginning as she immediately found herself gravitating to those books that met her needs for solace. "...Throughout my life, I've turned to books when I needed pleasure or escape, comfort or wisdom. After my sister died, it was all the gifts offered by books that brought me back to a place I never thought I'd find again, a place of energy, hope, and joy..." The love of books that was the connection to her sister as she often found herself reaching for what her sister liked, especially Philip Roth books.
Following a brief business meeting of the Friends of Milford Library at 7p.m., Nina will speak. Copies of her book will be available for purchase. The event will be held in the Program Room on the lower level of Milford Library at 57 New Haven Avenue. Additional parking is available at Lisman Landing.
