After a year of construction the project has a completion date.

MILFORD, CT — If you've wondered when the new REI store was opening at the former Smiles/Milford Amusement site at 1645 Boston Post Road, then wonder no more.

REI will officially open for business on Oct. 28.

“With the news that REI is set to open late October, we are truly looking forward to the addition of such a noteworthy company here in Milford. It is obvious in speaking with the team at REI that they will be great community partners," said Community and Economic Development Director Julie Nash.

REI sells gear and apparel for outdoor pursuits, including hiking, cycling, fitness, camping, snowsports, traveling, climbing, kayaking, canoeing, bird watching and more. Also outdoor classes are also offered at some locations, which is a unique feature offered by the business.

The site includes a 7-½ acre parcel.

The site remained empty for several years after Smiles/Milford Amusement abruptly closed in August 2011. At the time it was believed home gaming and increased competition led Smiles to close. Milford Amusement opened in the 1980s. The facility was demolished a couple of years ago.
