Milford Eyes Tougher Medical Marijuana Regulations

Some city residents are protesting the planned opening of a new dispensary that is near their residential neighborhood.

MILFORD, CT - Currently, Milford has one of the least restrictive zoning regulations in the state concerning medical marijuana dispensaries.

And that is largely why the city has been approved for two such locations by the state at 318 New Haven Avenue and 255 West River Street.

Residents living on West River Street and nearby are vehemently protesting the dispensary saying it’s too close to their residential neighborhood and are worried about crime and declining property values.

One resident said a recent real estate transaction fell through once news surfaced that a marijuana dispensary was going there, the New Haven Register reports.

Milford’s Mayor Benjamin G. Blake and the Milford Prevention Council are proposing a regulation change, which would make it harder for more dispensaries to open in the city, but it wouldn’t impact the application on West River Street, the Register reports.

The proposed regulation would require a 1,000 foot separation between facilities and residential neighborhoods and schools. Also no such facilities would be allowed on New Haven Avenue, which could impact the planned dispensary at 318 New Haven Avenue, the Register reports.

Earlier this week, Milford Patch reported that West River Street residents signs protesting the dispensary were stolen and some residents were pelted with eggs. Milford police tell the Register that the stolen signs were largely recovered and were likely a teen prank.
