MILFORD, CT — Police have made an arrest in a December street takeover in which an officer was attacked and injured.

A police officer responded to the Stop & Shop parking lot at 855 Bridgeport Ave. on Dec. 9 at 1:45 a.m.

Several people confronted the officer who arrived at the parking lot. A male in a red puffer jacket threw a shopping cart directly at the officer, police said.

The male ran when the officer attempted to take him into custody. The officer caught up to him but was then surrounded by a large crowd. The officer was assaulted from behind and injured, police said.

Fireworks and M-80s were also set off at the officer's patrol vehicle. Police also released a video of the incident.

Following what police said was "an extensive investigation," police identified the male in the red puffer jacket. Police submitted an arrest warrant, which was issued by New Britain Juvenile Court.

Police took the juvenile into custody Monday. He is a Connecticut resident whose identity is being withheld due to his age.

He was charged with attempt at assault of a public safety personnel, interfering with a police officer, first-degree rioting, and unlawful assembly.

Police said in a statement: "The Milford Police Department would like to recognize the collaboration with neighboring police departments and would also like to thank the public for their help throughout this investigation. This remains an on-going investigation and the Milford Police Department is actively pursuing leads for other suspects."

In West Haven, another street takeover was attempted in December. Six people were charged after throwing fireworks at police officers in the incident, according to police.
