New Haven Police Launch Citizens' Academy Program
A 5-week course, it's designed to "foster communication, collaboration, respect, and understanding" between police and residents.

NEW HAVEN, CT — The New Haven Police Department has launched its first Citizens' Academy.
The five-week course designed to "foster communication, collaboration, respect, and understanding" between police and residents, according to police spokesperson Capt. Rose Dell.
The program will cover a diverse range of topics including community policing, de-escalation techniques, how the court system works, and more. Dell said those who participate will get an "in-depth insight into the workings of the department."

The Citizens' Academy is not the Police Academy, and graduates will not receive police officer
certification. The program is open to New Haven residents over 21. Applicants
with no outstanding arrest warrants, no felony convictions, and no convictions involving
domestic violence or weapon use are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be willing to
submit to a background check.
The course is being held Wednesday evenings from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. starting Sept.
6 through Oct. 4 at the New Haven Police Training Center, 200 Wintergreen Ave.

Applicants must attend all sessions to graduate.
