NEW HAVEN, CT — In May 2025, New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker announced the creation of New Haven’s American 250 Commission. The objective was to help guide local planning and engagement for the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776 and the founding of the nation.

In response, the commission worked with local organizations, institutions and community partners to develop and identify a wide variety of activities that will be happening across the Elm City throughout the year.

With a focus on elevating local history, understanding democracy and practicing civics, the events span a diverse mix of topics and time periods from the nation’s origin to the present day, including art exhibits, cultural events, community conversations, film screenings, historical tours, interactive events, lectures, museum exhibits, receptions, the city’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration and other gatherings for all ages and interests.
