Newington Police Cancel Search for Suspicious Man: UPDATED
A man in an older model car repeatedly asked a pre-teen girl to get into his car Thursday afternoon, according to police.

NEWINGTON, CT — Police are no longer looking for a man accused of attempting to lure a 12-year-old girls into his car Thursday afternoon.
"We are no longer looking for this vehicle and driver. The driver has been interviewed and there is no threat to the public," Lt. William Jameson said in a statement distributed to the media late Friday afternoon.

NEWINGTON, CT — Police are searching for information about a suspicious man in an older model Volkswagen who tried to lure a 12-year-old girl into his car in front of an elementary school Thursday afternoon.
Around 1:22 p.m., the driver of the car pulled up to the girl on Halleran Drive in front of Patterson Elementary School and offered her a ride home. The girl did not recognize the operator and ignored his offer, but he slowly followed her and asked her multiple times to get into the car. The girl approached her father, who was waiting to pick her up from school, and the VW left the area, police said.

The operator is described as a white man, possibly in his 50s, with a beard and brown hair. School surveillance video captured an image of the vehicle, which appears to be an older model silver Volkswagen Passat. No registration plate was visible, police said.
The Newington Police Department has increased patrols in the area around all schools, and school security staff has been made aware of the incident, police said.
