Newington Volunteer Firefighter Placed On Leave Amid Criminal Probe, Official Says

Officials said that the firefighter has been placed on leave while a criminal investigation is underway.

NEWINGTON, CT — A volunteer firefighter is under criminal investigation and has been placed on leave, said Deputy Fire Chief Craig Stegmaier.

Stegmaier told Patch late Wednesday that the investigation does not involve the fire department. He said police responded to Newington Volunteer Fire Department Company 2 on Tuesday as part of its investigation.

The nature of the criminal probe has not been released, as it's a pending investigation.

Stegmaier said he doesn't know the "scope of the investigation," but reiterated it involves the person and not the fire department. He said it made sense to place the firefighter on leave while the criminal probe continues.

Stegmaier said it's important to keep the citizens informed of all types of news, and that is what they are doing here.
