On Thursday, April 11, 2013, the Bennie Dover Jackson Middle School “Leadership Program,” under the direction of Ed Sweeney and partnered with New England Science and Sailing, launched a drift buoy into the Atlantic Ocean. The group worked with a commercial scalloper, Capt. Joe of the Patty Joe, who was willing to bring the buoy out past Block Island and release it. Soon, the students will have a website activated and will use the data obtained from the buoy in a variety of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) applications in the classroom.
BDJMS has built a partnership with New England Science and Sailing, which is located in Stonington Borough. Students travel to their learning labs for hands on applications of STEM related topics and in turn, students gain insight and background knowledge of marine sciences.
