Performances run from August 17 – 19, 2012 at 2PM and 7PM at The Writers Block Performing Arts Center in New London, CT. Breaking Ground tells the story of a homeless shelter and the diverse people connected to the shelter. “Breaking Ground” tackles issues such as homelessness, abuse, broken relationships, and economic struggle. The storyline was inspired by The Writers Block, InK’s relationship with the New London Homeless Hospitality Center and The Block was fortunate to have the Center’s Laura Edstein serve as a consultant for the script. “Breaking Ground,” however, is an original story that was created and written by Writers Block’s “Summer on the Block” staff and students. The production features music, dance, and poetry intertwined into the amazing script.
The mission of The Writers Block, Ink is to arm young voices with the power of pen, poetry and prose, reinforcing teamwork, accountability, and responsibility – igniting social change on the page and the stage. The Writers Block Ink was started in 2003 as a 501c3 non-profit organization to encourage youth to use writing and performance as tools to address personal and social challenges on the community stage.
