NOAA, Coast Guard To Complete Inter-Agency Signing

Officer training for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration moved to the Coast Guard Academy last year

The Coast Guard Academy will host an official inter-agency signing Friday to affirm a new partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Last year, NOAA officer candidates began training with the Coast Guard's Officer Candidate School. The NOAA training had formerly trained at the Kings Point Maritime Academy, but moved in with the Coast Guard following the closing of the Global Maritime and Transportation School. The academy said in a press release that the collaboration made sense due to similar missions and training in the Coast Guard and NOAA.

At 8 a.m. on Friday, the inter-agency agreement will be signed between the NOAA Corps Officer Training Center and the Coast Guard Academy Leadership Development Center to document the relocation of NOAA's basic officer training course to the Coast Guard's officer candidate course. The signing will take place at Henriques Hall.

Following the signing, the NOAA class of 18 new officers will perform honors at 9 a.m. outside Hamilton Hall for Dr. Kathryn D. Sullivan, acting Under Secretary of Commerce for Oceans and Atmosphere and acting administrator of NOAA. A graduation will take place at 10:30 a.m. at Leamy Hall.
