Two Women Lead New London Police in Car Chase: Deputy Chief

A car reportedly collided with another car, struck two snowbanks and led police on a car chase, New London police said.

New London Police received a 911 call at approximately 6:03 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, from a person who witnessed a car collide with another car in the area of Jefferson Avenue at Elm Street.

The witness to the accident followed the vehicle and provided police with the make, model and registration plate of the 2003 Ford Explorer.

The car hit a snowbank on Jefferson Avenue near Redden Avenue and an officer heading to the call located the car and attempted to pull the car over.

The driver of the car allegedly engaged the officer in pursuit and refused to stop, New London Deputy Police Chief Peter Reichard said.

The car continued south on Colman Street, reaching speeds of 35 to 40 mph, police said. The chase ended when the car struck another snowbank and became temporarily disabled after trying to take a right turn onto Bank Street from Colman Street.

Police secured the vehicle and its two occupants — Tiana Colon, 18, of 178 Ledyard St., New London; and Jessica Lugo, 27, of 309 Crystal Ave., New London.

Reichard said police seized narcotics, an electronic defense weapon/stun gun and a knife from the car.

Colon was arrested for:

  • Operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs
  • Engaging an officer in pursuit
  • Operating a motor vehicle without a license
  • Evading responsibility
  • Misuse of registration
  • Operating an unregistered/uninsured motor vehicle
  • Possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle
  • Carrying a dangerous weapon
  • Possession of narcotics

She is being held in lieu of a $100,000 bond.

Lugo was charged with possession of narcotics and is being held in lieu of $7,500 bond. No injuries to either civilians or those arrested were reported, Reichard said.

The car was towed from the scene.
