I held My Son A Little Tighter Today

For Our Friends in Heaven and on Earth

I held my son a little tighter today;

As I hesitated to put him in his crib,

I felt a pain in my heart and soul,

Hearing the news of Connecticut.

I felt sick for instantly I knew

The pain and suffering that has begun -                                  

For the parents, family and friends

Over the loss of their loved ones.

My heart went out in thought and prayer

For the innocents’ loss of lives

For all who endured the tragedy

At 12 Dickenson Drive.

I can’t imagine the horror

Of teacher, student and responder,

The blessed parents, family and friends

With hearts now broken asunder.

And so my prayers began -

Along with my little son.

In faith I laid him in his crib,

And through the fear I come.

I come to Thee, Dear Lord,

Through tears I plea intensely

Please be with those named above

And heal their wounds ever swiftly.

Cradle them in Thy tender care;

Comfort and warm their hearts;

Bless them to feel the power of prayers,

Let them see the better part.

Bless me to bear some of the burden;

That for them seems too great to grasp.

I promise to do all I can

To be strong and rise to the task.

I am my brothers’ keeper;

From my core, I offer to be.

Please Lord hear my petition

I kneel and pray fervently.

I pray for my brothers and sisters,

In our human family

To be imbibed in peace, love and courage,

From the world, and You and me.

Please sustain them, bolster them up

And remind them of their worth

Show them that their children live on

Beyond this mortal earth.

Please bless them with enduring faith

To feel the strength of love,

And know that someday they can see

Their loved ones up above.
