Safe: A Poem for Newtown
Written for all the parents whose babies have preceded them into eternity...
Safe
(So much that happened today is beyond comprehension. Grief that defies description. But one thing I know…Jesus is holding many souls tonight – those that just entered into His glorious presence and those who remain here on earth and ache so deeply….Jesus, hear our cries…)

Twenty precious little souls
Before conception, known.
Every hair was counted
Before they graced this earth
Created in God’s image
Each with priceless worth.
Every finger, every toe
Every personality
Uniquely crafted by the One
Whose love caused them to be.
Moms and daddies cry tonight
A loss no one should know
A grief so indescribable
In their hearts a gaping hole.
But twenty children sing tonight
And dance around a throne
Hand in hand with One they love
And their hearts have always known.
If they could write a letter
This is what they’d say
As they begin eternity
On this first eternal day…
“Mommy, daddy, got here safe.
Just wanted you to know.
Your hearts must be so sad today.
You wish I didn’t go.
But, mommy you should see this place!
Daddy, you should, too!
Pearly gates for you mom
And dad, the sky’s so blue!
All my owies went away
When Jesus called my name
And carried me to heaven
Even faster than a plane!
The food up here is yummy
The music’s really cool
And recess is even better
Than it was at my old school!
The colors here are brighter
Everything’s brand new!
And I can run way faster
Even without my fast shoes!
Everyone is nice here
Everyone plays fair
The girls don’t punch me in the arm
And I don’t pull their hair.
Can you imagine Christmas?
I live with the Newborn King!
No wonder there are presents!
No wonder people sing!
The angels here are awesome
They let me sing along
I think that I met Harold,
You know, the one who Harked the song!
Now I know why Jesus came
And the meaning of His birth
He came to bring us heaven – THIS!
When He came to earth.
And since you know my Jesus
You’ll come here someday, too
I’ll show you every special place
And everything I do!
So when you think about me
Please do it with a smile
We’ll be together once again
In just a little while…”
Psalm 139:13-16 - For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
