Newtown Budget Referendum Polls Open Until 8 p.m.

Voter turnout for today's referendum has been sparse, but there's still time to vote for Newtown's school and town budgets.

With about an hour left to vote in today’s referendum on Newtown’s town and school budgets, voter turnout remains quite low.

As of 6 p.m., 2,405 residents voted out of 17,099 registered voters in Newtown. That’s about 14 percent of registered voters. Polls are open until 8 p.m. tonight at the Newtown Middle School gymnasium.

Voter turnout for referendums in Newtown is notoriously low and has been decreasing in recent years. There was baout 30 percent turnout in the 2012 referendum, 26 percent turnout in 2013, and a mere 19 percent voter turnout at last year’s budget referendum.
