Newtown Home of Sandy Hook Shooter Adam Lanza Demolished

The home of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooter has been destroyed.

The house where the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was conceived and where the bloodshed started has been torn down.

The demolition took a little over a day to complete, said Fred Hurley, director of Newtown Public Works. Work started Monday morning and wrapped up on Tuesday.

Debris from the site has been cleared and the basement has been filled with dirt.

“We tried to keep it as low key as possible for the neighborhood,” Hurley said.

Come spring the town will decide what further work if any has to be done to the property. That may include the addition of plants or just letting natural growth take over, he said.

Shooter Adam Lanza and his mother Nancy Lanza lived in the home at 36 Yoganada St. Nancy Lanza owned the home, which was eventually sold to the Town of Newtown for $1 by the bank that came to own the property.

The town planned to spend $30,000 on demolishing the property, but Plainville-based Manafort Brothers stepped in and offered to perform the demolition for free.

A spokesman for the company declined to comment on the demolition.

Legislative Council Chairman Mary Ann Jacob told the News-Times she was happy that the demolition was done.

Readers on our Facebook page shared the opinion that the demolition of the house is a step towards helping those affected by the tragedy. First Selectwoman Patricia Llodra previously told Newtown Patch that the house stood as a daily reminder of the tragic events to those she had spoken with.

Lanza, 20, killed his mother on Dec. 14, 2012 before heading to Sandy Hook Elementary School where he killed 20 children and six adults.
