NORWALK, CT — When news broke back in 2019 that Sally's Apizza, a historic New Haven staple and one of Connecticut's most iconic pizzerias, planned to open a new location at the SoNo Collection shopping mall in Norwalk, local and nearby residents were understandably very happy.

A sign has been up at the mall for a while now advertising the forthcoming pizzeria, however it has yet to open as of April 2024.

Hungry Norwalk residents eager for a slice of tomato pie may not need to wait much longer, however, as the iconic pizzeria chain confirmed Friday the restaurant is currently on track to open at the mall before the year is up.

In an email to Patch, a Sally's Spokesperson said the new Norwalk location "will open at the SoNo Collection mall later this year."

The spokesperson declined to provide further information about the Norwalk restaurant or an estimated timeframe for when the new location might open at this time but teased future updates.

"Ideally, we look to open in lifestyle centers or in locations that are walkable to some percentage of the community," Sally's COO Ted Zizlsperger said in a statement sent to Patch. "The SoNo Collection Mall met these expectations and we are excited to open there later this year."

A request for comment from Brookfield Properties, the mall's operator, was not returned Friday.

"We are very pleased to be welcoming Sally’s to Norwalk," Greater Norwalk Chamber President Brian Griffin said to Patch. "Not only will they bring their distinctive and delicious pizza to the area, but further cement the SoNo Collection as a food destination."

Founded in the late 1930's by Salvatore Consiglio, Sally's became known over the years for its "thin crust pizza still baked in the same coal-fired oven that has been in use for over 80 years."

The Consiglio family sold the Wooster Street business in late 2017 to Stamford-based Lineage Hospitality, which said at the time that it had plans to expand the business nationally.

In addition to its famed New Haven location, Sally's currently operates restaurants in Stamford and Fairfield, as well as Woburn, Mass.

The pizzeria's website teases a number of new locations "coming soon," including Norwalk, Newington, Wethersfield, West Hartford and Boston.

When it opens, the new Sally's restaurant will mark another new addition to the SoNo Collection's roster of dining and retail experiences. The mall recently welcomed a Charlotte Russe store and a Häagen-Dazs ice cream scoop shop.
