Historic Taftville Church Burns Overnight

Roughly 35 percent of the 119-year-old church was damaged by fire, while other areas had smoke and water damage.

TAFTVILLE, CT — A historic church burned overnight in Taftville, but firefighters were able to save the structure, according to authorities.

Emergency personnel responded shortly after 10 p.m. Saturday to Taftville Congregational Church on North B Street, Taftville Fire Co. No. 2 said in a Facebook post. When crews arrived, about 20 percent of the 119-year-old building was ablaze. Taftville is a neighborhood in Norwich.

Numerous agencies responded to assist and the fire was contained to the altar, an office, and the church seating area, according to authorities. Roughly 35 percent of the structure was damaged by flames, while other areas had smoke and water damage.

“We would like to thank all of our aid company’s for helping us make a successful save of a iconic building in our community,” the Taftville agency said in the post.
