New Budget Approved By Norwich Board Of Education

The 2018-19 public schools spending plan reportedly partially hinges millions of dollars worth of savings from a renegotiated contract.

NORWICH, CT — The Norwich Board of Education this week unanimously approved a budget of $78.46 million for the 2018-19 school year, a spending plan that calls on district officials to renegotiate employment and vendor contracts to secure $4 million in savings, writes the Norwich Bulletin.

The budget, which was approved by the City Council earlier this month, represents a 3 percent increase over the current public schools allocation of $76.2 million, and it means the board will not pursue legal action against the city for inadequate funding.

District officials had sought nearly $5 million more for next year to operate the school system, but the $4 million in contractual savings could help address some of that shortfall.
