NBC Connecticut reports DiGiovanni told the publication in October he had entered the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 after attending then-President Donald Trump's nearby "Stop the Steal" rally. He was not an alderman at that time, but was later elected to the position and later ran for mayor.

DiGiovanni was one of four candidates on the ballot for mayor in November after winning the Republican mayoral primary but lost to Democrat Joseph DiMartino.

In December, NBC News reported DiGiovanni planned to plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of entering and remaining in a restricted building. A plea agreement hearing was set for January by a federal judge in Washington.
