Travel Channel Wants To Film At Historic Sterling Opera House

The building has been the site of other filming locations in the past.

DERBY, CT — The Board of Aldermen is considering allowing the Travel Channel to film at the Sterling Opera House in February 2020 for up to three days.

The board is set to vote on the request at its Thursday meeting, according to the meeting agenda.

The opera house is a national historic landmark and the inside is closed to the public due to needed repairs, according to the Valley Independent Sentinel.

The inside of the opera house was a film location in 2011 for the Ghost Hunters television show.

Sterling Opera House is named after Charles Sterling, a piano manufacturer. It opened in 1889 and is located across from the Derby green. The building is known for its high quality acoustics and triangular layout that provides all attendees with a good view, according to the city website.

The building operated as a theater until 1945 and after that it was used by city hall and the police department. It was also used as a local jail. The city stopped using it in 1965.
