Man, Juveniles Sentenced in Brutal Southington Halloween Assault Case

A man will be spending time in jail after pleading guilty to a brutal assault that took place in Southington last Halloween.

A Plantsville man was sentenced to five years in jail suspended after one year for his part in a brutal assault that severely injured a victim.

James Wernicki received the jail sentence plus five years of probation after pleading guilty on July 8.

The assault allegedly occurred after the victim was accused of “snitching” to police about an unrelated criminal matter.

The victim sustained damage to his head and teeth. A female party host was reportedly assaulted as well. She told police that the male victim sounded like he was drowning because he had so much blood in his mouth.

Three juveniles were sentenced, but their records are sealed, according to someone familiar with the case.

A jury trial is scheduled for July 29 for defendant Darryl Hotham and defendant Andrew D’agostino is in the pre-trial phase, according to court records. Both pleaded not guilty.
