SOUTHINGTON, CT — Back in the "old days," researching a property's municipal permit history required a drive to town hall, a friendly face in the town clerk, building department or assessor's office and a lot of patience.

The "old days" recently evolved into the modern digital age last week, when the Town of Southington Friday, Jan. 6, unveiled a new feature where an address and a click are all that's required to research a property's history in the town.

The system is called "City Squared" and it aims to make it simple and easy to see what's been done at town hall regarding a property.

"We are pleased to announce that you can now view most property permit history using the online system City Square," wrote the town in an online announcement.

If you click on the link provided by the town, it takes you to a map of Southington and an area to type in an address.

When that's complete, the site then tells you who owns the property, shows a photograph of the site and, upon further searching, will list all the permits and other pertinent public information on the property.

It means that what used to be done at town hall can, now, be done from the comfort of your own home — even if "home" is in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Despite the automation, however, the town staff is still there to help folks with any questions.

Those who are unable to locate a property can call the Southington Tax Assessor's office at 860-276-6205.
