South Windsor Freedom 5K Road Race Set for Saturday

The run is being coordinated by a boy scout and is raising funds for the construction of a memorial wall at Veterans Memorial Park.

The South Windsor Police Department and the South Windsor Parks and Recreation Department are co-sponsoring the South Windsor Freedom 5K Road Race. The event will take place on Saturday morning, May 16, 2015, beginning at 8:30 at the South Windsor Community Center. May 16 is Armed Forces Day.

The run is being coordinated by a local Boy Scout as part of his Eagle Scout requirements. The Scout, Sean Reed, a sophomore at South Windsor High School, is raising money for the construction of a memorial wall that is to be added to the veterans memorial at Veterans Memorial Park on Pleasant Valley Road in South Windsor.

The building of the memorial wall is being spearheaded by the South Windsor Patriotic Commission. The Freedom 5K is one of a series of events raising money for the wall.

Runners can register on line at www.plattsys.com or by mail. Entry forms are available on the South Windsor Police website (www.police.southwindsor.org) or at the www.plattsys.com website under “upcoming races” as the “S Windsor Freedom Run”. The entry fee is $25 for adults and $15 for runners 12 and under. The course includes streets in the South Windsor High School neighborhood as well as a portion of the Nevers Road Park trail system.

Armed Forces Day is a day designated each year to honor all those who have served and are currently serving in our military. The first Armed Forces Day was celebrated in 1950. For many years, the South Windsor Patriotic Commission has hosted a community celebration in Nevers Road Park to mark the Day. The evening will be capped off with fireworks at dusk.
