South Windsor Obituary: Thelma Bengtson, 84

Condolences to her family and friends.

Thelma Shirley (Smith) Bengtson passed away at Hartford Hospital on January 29, 2018 at age 84.

Thelma was a lifetime resident of South Windsor. She was a graduate of Ellsworth Memorial High School class of 1953. Thelma was a lifetime member of the South Windsor Historical Society, a long time 4-H leader and volunteer, member of the First Congregational Church of South Windsor, member of the South Windsor Volunteer Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, and a telephone volunteer for Friends in Service Here.

Thelma was an avid UConn Huskies basketball fan of both the women and men’s teams. She also followed Red Sox baseball.

She is preceded in death by her loving husband Clarence G. “Bing” Bengtson, Jr., her parents Thomas W. Smith and Shirley E. (Garrow) Smith, as well as all her siblings: David Smith, Bill Smith, and Eleanor Smith Archambault. She is survived by her son Thomas G. Bengtson of South Windsor; her daughter Laurie A. (Bengtson) Piaskowski of Lititz, PA; her grandchildren: Crystal A. (Piaskowski) Bucks of Jonestown, PA, Travis J. Piaskowski of Lititz, PA, Melissa M. Bengtson of Virginia, and Amanda J. Bengtson of South Windsor, along with many nieces and nephews.

Her family will receive friends on Friday, February 2, 2018, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Samsel & Carmon Funeral Home, 419 Buckland Rd., South Windsor. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2018, 10 a.m., at the First Congregational Church of South Windsor, 993 Main St., South Windsor. Burial will follow at Center Cemetery in South Windsor.

In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to either The First Congregational Church South Windsor, The South Windsor Historical Society, or Hartford County 4-H camp. We will always carry her memory in our hearts.
