Decision Reached For Lifeguard In Chelsea Piers Near-Drowning
A young New Canaan boy almost drowned at the Stamford facility last year.

STAMFORD, CT — A former lifeguard at Chelsea Piers was given Accelerated Rehabilitation - a court probationary program - Friday in connection with the near-drowning of a young New Canaan boy at the sports facility last summer, reports the Stamford Advocate.
New Canaan resident Zachary Stein faced charges of risk of injury to a child and reckless endangerment, but with successful complete of the two-year program, his record will be wiped clean. State's Attorney Richard Colangelo, who wanted stiffer punishment, objected to the court's decision.
Adam Khattak was underwater for more than 4 and a half minutes before Stein, who was 23 years old last summer, pulled him out and began CPR. Khattak not only survived, but does not appear to have suffered any lasting damage, according to authorities.

Surveillance video showed Stein walking around the pool during those minutes, but he appears not to be aware of the child's situation. Those minutes of inaction contributed to authorities filing charges against him.
