STAMFORD, CT — The driver in a fiery Maserati crash that occurred in Stamford last month has died from his injuries, police said in an update Tuesday. Diego Ubillus, 22, of Stamford, died Monday as a result of his injuries, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner ruled, according to Sgt. Jeffrey Booth.

The vehicle's two passengers, both Stamford residents in their early 20's, suffered various degrees of burns and other injuries, Booth said. They are currently recovering from their injuries. (To sign up for Stamford breaking news alerts and more, click here.)

According to Booth, Ubillus was driving a 2016 Maserati along Westhill Road at "a very high rate of speed" when the vehicle crossed over to the wrong side of the road around 8 p.m. on June 22.

The Maserati then left the roadway and began traveling along the curb line. Booth said the vehicle then went through several front yards and hit a few mailboxes.

"After traveling up the side of the road for approximately 300 feet, the Maserati struck a tree, then burst into flames as it came to rest in the middle of Westhill Road, just east of Westover Road," Booth said in a statement.

Ubillus and the two passengers were able to exit the vehicle, however all three suffered various degrees of burns and other injuries, Booth said.

Ubillus was badly burned in the fire and transported to Stamford Hospital with life-threatening injuries, and was later transported to the burn unit at Bridgeport Hospital, Booth said.

"While the investigation is continuing, excessive speed is a contributing factor in this crash," Booth said, "tests performed on the blood of Mr. Ubillus on the night of the crash indicate that he was operating the vehicle under the influence of alcohol and was well above legal limit of .08 percent BAC."

A GoFundMe has been set up to aid Ubillus's family in funeral expenses and to set up "some version of a scholarship fund or charity," according to page's description. As of Tuesday afternoon, the page has raised over $27,000 toward a $50,000 goal thank to contributions from over 300 donors.

"His family has so appreciated all of the support, love, prayers, thoughts and meals that you have so generously given," an update made to the page Monday reads. "They thank you from the bottom of their hearts."
