Bike To Work Every Day? Ask Apollo!

By Ellyn Santiago

It’s Bike to Work Day Friday in Connecticut, all part of the celebration of May as Bike Month.

We found the guy who should be on the poster!

From Pawcatuck now, when 20-year-old Apollo Ziembroski lived in Mystic and attended Fitch High School, he committed in his junior year to ride his bike to school every day.

Every day.

And he did; rain, shine, storms. Every day. And, as he said, he had perfect attendance that year. He graduated from Fitch in 2010.

Now, Apollo rides his bike to work every day to the Mystic Cycle Shop, where he’s worked, well, his whole working life — it was his first and only gig. He has no car, has never owned one. He doesn’t even have a driver's license; doesn’t need it.

No, we all can’t be Apollo (well, we could), but the concept of biking to work is not so far-fetched. Thousands do it every day, but groups like Bike League and Bike Walk CT hope to get folks out of cars and on to bikes.

So, what’s the number one excuse people have for not biking to work?

“My butt hurts,” with the perfunctory weather worry to concern about sweatiness upon arrival also making the Top 10 list.

But perhaps the biggest worry for many is safety. Connecticut Department of Transportation’s got that covered; kind of.

So get to biking!
