The Coast Guard Foundation, a Stonington-based non-profit organization, participated in a Coast Guard Walk to Remember today on its property in town.
The Coast Guard Remember movement – which raises funds to support the Coast Guard Foundation’s Fallen Heroes Scholarship Program – will hold the majority of its events the weekend of May 17 - 19, 2013 at venues across the country. The weekend of walks, runs, bike rides and workouts raises funds for the children of Coast Guard members who have died in the line of duty.
The signature event of Coast Guard Remember is the Keys 100, a 100-mile ultra-marathon that starts in Miami and ends in Key West, Florida, in which 90 Coast Guard members will run in teams to honor Coast Guard personnel who have died in the line of duty since 1978.
Additionally, at Coast Guard bases and in cities across the country, family and friends of the Coast Guard are participating in activities to pay tribute to those service members who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country.
“We are proud to be part of Coast Guard Remember events, and we are honored to have its proceeds support our Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund,” said Robert Flynn, chairman of the board of directors, Coast Guard Foundation. “During times of trouble, the Coast Guard Foundation acts as a lifeline for members of the Coast Guard. The Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund allows us to provide support for those who have lost loved ones in the line of duty.”
For over 40 years, the Coast Guard Foundation has been committed to inspiring leadership, learning and a proud legacy of service to our nation by supporting the men of women of the United States Coast Guard and their families. In addition to the Fallen Heroes Scholarship Fund, the Foundation provides higher education grants to enlisted members, reservist and their children; financial relief to Coast Guard families who have lost possessions in natural disasters; and support for morale programs, including funding recreation, exercise and family-oriented facilities.
